Isn't that the sort of thing you ought to have figured out before coming up here?
[He didn't even know whether Mephisto could follow, so surely he wasn't planning on him saving the day... unless getting into situations like this is just another Tuesday for Link. Which seems likely, honestly.]
But it's been snowing for a while now. So long as no rocks or pits have been covered by the fresh snow, you should have a fairly decent chance of surviving a fall.
[ actually, nothing might be better for the sheer surprise of instant death (with an appropriately white-colored 'Game Over')? but at least there's some kind of helpful analysis! ]
There's a ledge that I think I can get to. It's a third of the way up, but it's something.
Oh, I think I can manage that much. Do try not to keep me waiting, yes?
[And you know what this asshole is going to do?]
[He's going to disappear in a poof of smoke -- teleporting only himself safely to the ledge in question. Depending on how long it takes Link to get there, he might have just poured himself a cup of tea... somehow, on a cliff edge. The tea is even hot!!]
[ god. why is Mephisto like this, getting to just POOF himself over to a safe ledge and enjoy a cup of tea like that? even Link, whose general demeanor is normally pretty neutral and calm (except for those times of intense, internal panic), is starting to feel a little frustrated this whole bit of nonsense...
which is why he as soon as he can spot that safe spot, he feels a bit of worry bubbling up in his chest.
one, it's higher than his current elevation and two? he's not sure how climbable that surface is right below it. BUT HE'LL TRY. and as soon as he gets close enough, he latches onto the wall and immediately feels hard rock underneath the coating of snow, this is good! very good.
[ somehow, he manages to clutch onto some kind of hold. gritting his teeth, Link can barely murmur a response. but he does. ]
Yes. More than a bit.
[ it doesn't help that the jacket is starting to restrict his movements a little, not allowing him to get his full range of motion. with a strained voice from effort: ]
[What he wouldn't give to pull off a re-enactment of the Lion King right now. But something that deliberate would get him in trouble with Mipha for sure.]
[This? He can probably talk his way out of it. It's not like he intends to get the guy die -- but it might be funny to let him freefall for a few feet before catching him.]
I've already done my good deed for the day in ensuring you wouldn't freeze to death. And I'm afraid there's a limit to how much charity a man like me is willing to offer.
... could you use your good deed for tomorrow now?
[ for better or for worse. he might even owe Mephisto something, but he's sure that somehow Mipha could intervene in some way if it was something truly dangerous. besides, as... interesting as Mephisto is, there must be some kind of inherent good deep down inside of him?
maybe???
his stamina ring is almost emptied, so to speak, and his grip is failing him. there's only one solution left and no time to do it except now.
[And Mephisto became the physical embodiment of the shrug emoji as Link plummeted to his death.]
[All right, not his death, but he does fall pretty far before Mephisto decides to give a shit. Right before he hits the ground, he'll suddenly find himself teleported up to the level ground on the edge of where Mephisto is standing. But because inertia is a bitch, he's still gonna eat snow anyway -- just not to any seriously harmful degree.]
[And for his part, Mephisto just sighs dramatically.]
--but I suppose Lady Mipha would be a bit cross with me if I were to allow you to fall to your death. So do be more careful in the future, yes?
[ but at least he'll get to hear Despacito as he plummets in this hypothetical Bad End, yea? it might be harder when there's suddenly snow in his ears and grunts as he hits the ground with a solid THUD. ]
... I would be cross too, if I wouldn't be able to properly say goodbye to her and her brother.
[ and not mad at Mephisto, but at himself. still, it's not like he didn't plan for a contingency where he wasn't saved. he would've used every remaining bit of strength to pull out the cloth and hope he had enough time. ]
I will try my best. [ hopefully the embarrassed look on his face is hard to see when he's laying flat on his back. ] For you, too.
See to it that you do. It would be shameful to see a great hero like yourself perish over some simple mistake.
[It might be hard to tell if that "great hero" comment is sarcastic or not, given Mephisto's usual mannerisms... even the truth is somewhere in between. If not for Mipha, he'd probably be fawning all over the guy given his "history".]
In any case, I'll leave you to catch your breath after such a harrowing existence! But as for me, I think I'll go on ahead.
[ he's feeling a little tired, but not to the point of falling asleep in the snow which would probably be the worst idea out of anything he's done so far. catching his breath is definitely the right thing to do, allowing his stamina to slowly but surely refill in a hypothetical circular meter unknown to everyone. ]
... thanks.
[ said between some of his longer breaths, as Link eventually climbs back onto his feet. after some stretches, he'll run as hard as he can to catch up to Mephisto! ]
[Unfortunately, he won't be catching up to Mephisto. As a snowy breeze cuts through the air, Mephisto turns and shoots Link a grin from a good distance away-- before abruptly vanishing in a poof of smoke.]
[Hopefully Link won't be needing his help again, because he plans to make the rest of the trip on his own.]
